Tramping, Hiking & Camping Equipment

Bev's Tramping Gear Hire, based in Te Anau, is the place to hire all your tramping/hiking and camping equipment. We can help you out with packs and sleeping bags if you are walking the Milford Track for the first time, or if you need to hire an ice axe and crampons for big winter missions.

How it works

We can send gear to anywhere in Otago or Southland, but prefer pickups from our shop in Te Anau to ensure proper fitting.

You can take gear away and arrange for it to be sent back to our shop.

We accept cash, credit cards and EFTPOS at the shop.

When collecting equipment we also require security for the hire, such as a passport or a credit card imprint. This is separate from the booking deposit.

Please decide carefully before you book. There are no refunds, unless DOC closes the track. If DOC closes the track, we will refund your payment minus the booking deposit.

Bev and the crew in Te Anau have extensive tramping experience, having tramped all around New Zealand and especially within Fiordland for decades. Bookings

We strongly recommend that you book ahead to hire hiking equipment for your trip into Fiordland. Booking is essential for all large orders over the NZ summer (between November and March).

A $50 NZD per person booking deposit is required for every Great Walks Special booking and any other order over $100 NZD. Your deposit is deducted from the total hire cost.

For example, a $200 hire for one person with a $50 deposit paid leaves $150 to pay.

To book:

  1. Send an email containing a list of what you need (including your sizes) to Bev who will check availability. You can also save time by letting us know your preferred payment method.
  2. Once Bev confirms availability, pay the $50 NZD per person booking deposit if required by:
  3. Bev will confirm your booking once any required deposit has been received. The deposit will be deducted from your total hire cost, leaving only the balance to pay.
